At Cam Hopton, we are passionate about teaching children to read. Reading helps to develop children's vocabulary, their writing and their spelling. Reading gives children access to the wider curriculum and enriches their lives. It is our aim that children leave this school as happy and confident readers. Reading is heavily linked with phonics and taught mainly within the National Curriculum. This starts with sharing picture books at school and at home and moving into books with words as appropriate to the individual child.
We use a variety of schemed books to do this, which are primarily:

• Rigby Star
• Big Cat
• Bug Club

As children develop their reading skills they progress onto 'Free Reader' texts which are drawn from new and classical, fiction and non-fiction genres.
Classes have rewards and incentives for reading.

Our reading spine, which runs through the schools, is made up of quality, topic linked texts to inspire and enthuse our children. We aim to ensure that texts are broad and balanced to encompass different cultures, religions and time periods.

Reading at Cam Hopton is taught through English lessons; phonic sessions; Guided & Whole Class Reading sessions and through wider curriculum learning. Children are taught how to use reading cues, such as punctuation, to make the best use of inflection and expression. We have a library that is managed by members of our PTA and children are enthusiastic about borrowing books. We recognise that the influence parents have on supporting their child's reading development is crucial. School/home links are sustained through the use of reading records.
